Circa 1886
This is a red driven cellar at heart, with 209 of its 396 wines in red and California, Oregon Pinot Noir, and Piedmont anchoring the range. The depth runs to serious Bordeaux at the top, with first growths like Mouton Rothschild and Haut Brion in the four figure tier, but the median sits around $115 and bottles open at $42, so there is real everyday drinking here too. Producers worth knowing on the floor include Saint Cosme, Orin Swift, Shafer, and Laurent Perrier and Taittinger in the eight Champagnes. Note there is no glass program, so everything is by the bottle, which means you are guiding tables toward commitment. It rewards a guest who wants Rhone, Oregon Pinot, or classed growth Bordeaux, and it leaves rosé, dessert, and orange wine as afterthoughts.
