Mavericks

This is a big, red leaning list, 381 bottles with reds outnumbering whites better than two to one, and it is built around depth rather than a single signature region. The strengths are real Champagne presence through Louis Roederer, a serious run of Chateau Musar, and a rosé anchor in Domaines Ott, while the top end climbs into Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Chateau Rayas for guests who want to spend. Prices run from $16 all the way to $4,200 with a median around $221, so there is honest range, but the heart of the buying lives in the low hundreds. The 19 glass pours are modest against the size of the list, so steer most tables toward bottles. There is also a genuine skin contact and orange section, 17 wines deep, which rewards the curious drinker who wants something off the usual track.
